چکیده

The damage threshold of fused silica in vacuum and air before or after 355nm laser irradiation is measured. The structure and defects of fused silica has been studied by means of FTIR (Fourier transform infrared), Raman and Fluorescence spectroscopy. The primary defect species are oxygen vacancies (such as Si–Si bonds), non-bridging oxygen hole center (NBOHC), oxygen interstitials (peroxy radicals, or O2 molecules). The damage threshold of fused silica in air after pre-irradiation increased, while the threshold of fused silica in vacuum after pre-irradiation decreased. The damage mechanisms are discussed. Misfit accommodation mechanism at the heterointerface between diamond and cubic boron nitride

Diamond and cubic boron nitride (c-BN) are the top two hardest materials on the Earth. Clarifying how the two seemingly incompressible materials can actually join represents one of the most challenging issues in materials science. Here we apply the temperature gradient method to grow the c-BN single crystals on diamond and report a successful epitaxial growth. By transmission electron microscop...

Transparent and colorless hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) single crystals were grown from the Mg-B-N system using high-pressure high-temperature cubic anvil

Transparent and colorless hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) single crystals were grown from the Mg-B-N system using high-pressure high-temperature cubic anvil technique. By varying the synthesis conditions we could determine the sequence of phase transformations occurring in the Mg-B-N system, construct the pressure-temperature (PT) phase diagram and discuss the possible growth mechanism. The large...

The search for novel , superhard materials

The recent development in the field of superhard materials with Vickers hardness of >40 GPa is reviewed. Two basic approaches are outlined including the intrinsic superhard materials, such as diamond, cubic boron nitride, C3N4, carbonitrides, etc. and extrinsic, nanostructured materials for which superhardness is achieved by an appropriate design of their microstructure. The theoretically predi...

High-Pressure Design of Advanced BN-Based Materials.

The aim of the present review is to highlight the state of the art in high-pressure design of new advanced materials based on boron nitride. Recent experimental achievements on the governing phase transformation, nanostructuring and chemical synthesis in the systems containing boron nitride at high pressures and high temperatures are presented. All these developments allowed discovering new mat...

The hBN to wBN phase transition modified by heavy ion irradiation

Boron nitride (BN) shows similarities to carbon, having a hexagonal (graphite-like) structure (hBN) and a cubic diamond type (cBN). Under ambient temperature conditions, hBN transforms irreversibly into wurtzitic BN (wBN) at pressures above 10.8 GPa [1]. We investigated the influence of ion irradiation on this displacive phase transition using in situ Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron X-ray di...
